Bianca Smith has been promoted to an Assistant Coach on the women's basketball staff, the program announced Monday. She moves to the assistant coaching position after serving one season as the video coordinator for the Rice program.
"I am very happy the Rice administration approved moving Bianca up to her new position," said Rice Head Coach Greg Williams. "I have always tried to promote from within my staff. Bianca worked very hard in her video coordinator position, and has a very bright future ahead of her in the coaching profession."
"She relates well to all of our players and brings a high level of energy and enthusiasm to our program every day," added Williams.
"Words cannot adequately express my gratitude to Coach Williams, his staff, and the Rice administration for giving me this opportunity," said Smith. "Coach Williams has created an amazing program here at Rice and I am so thankful for this chance to use my basketball acumen to help better our scholar-athletes and our program."
"I look forward to assisting him and the rest of the staff in getting to, and advancing in the NCAA Tournament," added Smith.
As video coordinator at Rice in 2012-13, she helped guide the Owls during a season that saw Rice compile the nation's 12th-longest winning streak at one point, and the second-most wins in a season at home (12) in program history.
In 2012, Smith played professionally for Utena in Lithuania, where she scored 33 points in seven games, including an appearance in the league's quarterfinals.
Smith spent the 2011-12 season at Texas Southern, where she was a graduate assistant responsible for breaking down and editing film. The Tigers posted non-conference victories over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Houston Baptist while she was with the Tigers.
Prior to joining the Tigers, Smith was an assistant to the head coach at Bellaire High School, where the Cardinals went 20-9 and advanced to the second round of the State Playoffs.
She was an event management assistant for IMG College during the 2011 NCAA Men's Final Four, co-hosted by Rice, helping with the ancillary events to the Final Four.
Smith was a four-year letter winner for the Colorado Buffaloes from 2006-10. She finished her career as Colorado's all-time leader in 3-pointers made and attempted.
She was 2009-10 Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year, averaging 12.8 points per game off the bench. She finished her career at Colorado 18th on Colorado's all-time scoring list with 1,138 points. She participated in the 3-point competition at the 2010 Final Four in Indianapolis.
