Texas Southern looked to win their first game of the season when they faced Alabama State at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday. They were only able to score 2 points and lost 34-2 to bring this season’s record to 0-5.
Most of the scoring was done in the first half as ASU went into the locker room with a 28-0 lead. The second half saw the Alabama State backups get most of the playing time as they scored six points on two Alex Lauthan field goals.

The Hornets defense was outstanding in the first half holding TSU to only eight yards on 27 plays. That includes -77 yards rushing on 15 running attempts.
“In my eyes the defense pitched a shutout tonight,” head coach Reggie Barlow said. “We gave up a safety there at the end which is unfortunate, but I thought our defense played with a lot of energy. They lined up and were very combative and got to the quarterback. We were able to get a couple of turnovers so we are proud of how they played.”
Brandon Thomas led TSU with 11 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 3.5 TFL. Michael Holmes, Tray Walker and Darveon Trahan each had 10 tackles. TSU will face Arkansas Pine Bluff this Saturday at 6:00pm.
