Sports Writer tells Colin Kaepernick to Turn His Hat around, Act Like a Professional

A New York-based sportswriter came under fire on Twitter this weekend after questioning Colin Kaepernick’s postgame wardrobe choices.

Kaepernick led his San Francisco 49ers to a 23-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers, accounting for a pair of touchdowns and outplaying opposing quarterback Cam Newton. However, the 26-year-old’s decision to wear his cap backward while meeting with the media drew the ire of Sal Maiorana, a sportswriter who covers the Buffalo Bills for the Democrat and Chronicle.

In a tweet that has since been deleted, Maiorana asserted that Kaepernick’s backward hat was somehow disrespectful to the media. “Kaepernick. Always so media friendly. Turn your cap around and act like a professional quarterback,” Maiorana wrote.

A cursory google search turns up a shocking fact: Lots of professional quarterbacks have been known to don a backward hat. This is something people in their 20s – gasp! – often do.

Twitter users criticized Maiorana, accusing him of being an Internet “troll” and claiming he attempted to provoke a reaction from 49ers fans. But the sportswriter didn’t seem to regret his tweet -- in fact, he wrote a follow-up tweet, claiming that he had experienced a “laugh riot” while viewing the angry responses from Kaepernick fans.
