Who Can Beat Manvel?

Last week I told you Manvel was the team to beat in 5A Region 3 and nothing has changed. The interesting thing that I’ve seen over the years is the best team doesn’t always represent the region and when you get down to a one game playoff, you only have to be the best team that particular game. That statement has been proven over the years however the Mavericks with their BCS frontline of Brianna Turner, Rangie Bessard and Jordan Hosey haven’t really been challenged with the region but its do or die time.

Who can beat them, well that’s going to be settled on the floor but they’re on a collision course with a very talented North Shore team to make it to area Final 4. North Shore is led by Chastity Patterson, one of the top freshmen in the country along with Adriiana Jackson and if those two are clicking, as well as the Mustangs’ supporting cast, they could create some problems.

Clear Springs is another bonafide threat because of a young lady who has made it to the area Final 4 all three of her high school years, Brooke McCarty. I started calling McCarty “The Chosen One “ after watching her play as an eight year old and as you can see, she has definitely been one of the main reasons for the Chargers success. McCarty was named to the McDonald’s All American team, like I told you last week Turner would be and she was and this young lady is capable of dropping over 40 if she gets on a roll

17-5A comes into the playoffs with one advantage, they have been playing against the toughest competition in the area week after week during district play and district winner Cy Fair has been rolling since losing to Manvel in early December. Angela Harris, Taylor McCowin and Shania Woods have grown considerably on the floor together and they will be part of the key to unlocking the door to Austin. Here’s a thought, 17-5A could conceivably send two teams to area Final 4.

Cy Woods big three of Olivia and Erica Ogwumike along with Nancy Mulkey could put it together and get out and much of that has to do with move-in Tatyana Perez and clutch play from Tyler Davis. Injuries throughout the season are probably why they didn’t win district but the most important season is getting ready to start. Cy Ranch also has been hampered by injuries but with a break here or there, they, along with Cy Creek are capable of surprising folks.

Ranch has Sydney Coleman, Cienna Rivera and DiDi Richards, another amazing freshman that made the adjustment just like that. Darianne Williams and Jessica Munoz have been on fire for the districts surprise team and again two of these four could make it to the Campbell Center but with the exception of Fair and Woods, the chance of the other two beating Manvel doesn’t appear to be in the cards.
