Senior defensive back Eric Brown intercepted Grambling State quarterback Frank Rivers late in the fourth quarter to help give the Tigers a 23-20 first ever victory at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Brown’s 21-yard interception return for a touchdown highlighted a decisive fourth quarter as the Tigers rallied to defeat Grambling State, giving them their first win at its new home venue.
“It’s a great feeling,” Eric Brown stated. “It was liberating. It’s a huge money off my back.”
TSU (2-6,2-5 SWAC) trailed 20-14 early in the fourth quarter when Grambling State (1-7,0-6) called a pass play that included a comeback route on the right side.
The Tigers took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but Grambling State rallied to produce 20 unanswered points starting late in the second quarter. The Tigers scored two quick passes to tie the score at 14-14 at halftime; however, a failed extra point attempt in the third quarter came back to haunt the G-Men.
TSU quarterback Rudy Johnson led TSU deep into Grambling territory and senior kicker Robert Hersh kicked a 31-yard field goal which proved to be the game winner with 4:14 left in the fourth quarter.
Running back Edward Perkins-Loving led TSU with 128 yards rushing on 19 carries. Johnson passed for 101 yards in the game, and junior receiver Fred Plummer led all receivers with 3 catches for 36 yards. Senior linebacker William Parker led the Tigers with 10 tackles in the game.
