The Texas Southern University Tigers football team had a tough time with the Arkansas Pine Bluff Lions Saturday afternoon at BBVA Compass Stadium, and despite a weather delay the Lions outplayed TSU and handed them a 49-3 loss in front of a homecoming crowd of 2,968.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff (7-2,6-1) clinched the Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division title and a berth in the league championship game. The Lions rolled up 476 yards of total offense and forced three turnovers, including two interceptions that were both returned for touchdowns.
Quarterback Benjamin Anderson threw for 265 yards and four touchdown passes which led to 42 unanswered points.
Texas Southern (2-7,2-5) has been heavily hit with injuries since the second game of the season. They have been forced to play a lot of younger players. They were held to just 135 total yards of offense while playing three quarterbacks.
It has been a difficult rebuilding season for the Tigers under first year head coach Darrell Asberry. TSU has just two more games on the 2012 schedule. They will travel to Lorman, Mississippi this week to face the Alcorn State Braves and they will end the season at home on Saturday, Nov. 17th vs. Mississippi Valley State at 1:00 p.m. at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Growing pains are sure to continue, but true Tigers fans need to remain optimistic about the future under Coach Asberry.
“This has been a tough season and we’re taking our bumps and bruises, “ head coach Darrell Asberry said. “I’m not happy at all, by no means with our performance.”
