Baylor’s Preseason National Player of the Year Brittney Griner returned home to Houston to face the Rice Owls in a non-conference game and she recorded 35 points, 9 rebounds, and four blocks in a 89-49 victory.
It was Griner’s first appearance in Houston as a Lady Bear and with her performance, Griner reached 1,000 rebounds for her career and became just the fifth Lady Bear to haul down 1,000 boards. Her 35 points scored against Rice, gave her 87 straight games of scoring in double-figures and 117 out of 119 games in her career.
She became just the second Big 12 women’s basketball player to score over 2,500 points and garner 1,000 rebounds. Griner, who was named the Big 12 Player of the Week, is only the sixth player to eclipse 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds since the Big 12’s inception. This was Griner’s first Big 12 honor of the 2012-13 season.
Brittney Griner has now recorded a block in 57 straight outings and in 116 of 119 career games.
She had at least 22 family members and friends in attendance at the game including: her parents-Ray and Sandra Griner, siblings-Shekira, DeCarlo, and Pleshette, nephew- E.J., her grandfather, cousins, her former Nimitz High School coach Debbie Jackson and many, many friends.
The Lady Bears went on the road after the Rice game to face Skylar Diggins and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. They will close out the year with three games at home starting with a double-header with Oral Roberts on Wed., Dec. 12th, Tennessee Lady Vols on Tuesday, Dec. 18th and Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday, Dec. 29th.
