Representative Sylvester Turner’s Family Day 2013 will be the biggest and best event ever seen in Northwest Houston.
The 6th Annual Family Day at Sylvester Turner Park will be held from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, at the park located at 2800 West Little York. Come early and spend the day with Rep. Turner and enjoy the food and activities for free.
“Family Day just gets bigger every year,” said Turner. “We expect up to 15,000 people for this year’s event. Don’t disappoint me—we want everyone in Northwest Houston to come. There will be plenty to eat and plenty to do for everyone from kids to seniors. And it’s all free.”
Turner is correct about plenty to eat. Delicious turkey legs, sausage on a stick, hot dogs, popcorn, nachos and more will be dished up.
It’s baseball season and what could be better than catching a couple of games at the park? Texas Southern University and Southern University will play at the Show Field on the north end of Turner Park beginning at 2 p.m. Youth baseball on the south end will start at 12 noon and continue through the afternoon.
If you prefer basketball, Family Day has a new event this year with basketball contests. Try your skills at three-point shooting, free throws or the three-on-three competitions. Registration begins at 2 p.m. with the contests at 2:30.
Do you like music and dancing? “We’ve got that, too,” says Turner. J. Paul and the Zydeco Nubreeds return to Family Day for their special brand of Zydeco music. For jazz lovers, we have the Eisenhower High School Jazz Band. And the Aldine Dance Company from Carver High School will again present their delightful dance routines.
Pepsi will bring back its truck with computer games. Comcast returns with the Hamster Balls. Inflatable games and a rockwall will keep the kids busy, along with Major League Baseball’s Wanna Play games that teach hitting, throwing and running. Seniors will have their own tent with games, including bingo and dominoes. And the always-popular facepainters will also be on hand.
METRO is again providing shuttle buses to bring attendees from three locations:
• Carver High School, 2100 South Victory
• Living Word Fellowship Church, 7350 W. TC Jester
• Lone Star Community College, 4141 Victory
The buses will run during the event from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. Shuttles and parking are free.
