TSU quarterback Riko Smalls threw for a career-high 365 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a score to lead Texas Southern to a 29-15 victory over the Southern Jaguars in its regular season home finale Saturday night at Delmar Stadium.
The Tigers, who improved to (4-5, 2-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference) action, took a 15-0 second-quarter lead as Smalls hit receiver Richard Samuel on a 7-yard touchdown pass. Smalls also added a 3-yard run and Samuel scored the two-point conversion with 14:55 left in the period.
Southern,(3-6, 3-4) fought back, reducing the Tigers lead to 22-15 on J.P. Douglas’ 24-yard touchdown pass with 11:45 left in the third quarter.
Smalls responded with a 13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Joe Anderson in the third quarter, with 1:31 left in the period. Both teams defensive units stopped each other throughout the remainder of the game as Texas Southern held on for the win.
Running backs Martin Gilbert and Marcus Wright combined for 100 yards on the ground. Richard Samuel led all receivers with 7 receptions for 129 yards. Joe Anderson had 8 catches for 94 yards and one TD.
Smalls, who had a career passing game also rushed for 71 yards on 16 carries. Texas Southern will travel to Grambling, Louisiana to face head coach Doug Williams and the Grambling State Tigers at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 12th.
