HOUSTON -- One of Houston’s premier dentists, Dr. Zeb F. Poindexter, Jr., died recently. He was 83. After becoming the first African-American to graduate from the University of Texas Dental Branch-Houston in 1956, Dr. Poindexter Jr. opened his first dental practice in Houston’s historic “Chocolate Bayou” neighborhood. By 1960, he built the Sunnyside Clinic on Cullen Boulevard, a 500-square-foot family dental practice which has grown into a 1,800-square-foot facility, known as Poindexter Dental, Inc.
Recognized as a trailblazer, Dr. Poindexter Jr. graduated from high school at 16. In addition to earning his dental degree, he obtained a Masters in Endocrinology at Texas Southern University. Over the years, Dr. Poindexter Jr. has received numerous awards and recognition for his contributions. Dr. Poindexter Jr. retired in 2000, after building a successful 42-year career in dentistry.
His son, Dr. Zeb F. Poindexter III, continues to operate the dental practice. Like his father, Poindexter III, is also a graduate of the University of Texas Dental Branch creating the first Black father/son duo.
