You would have to have been living under a rock to not have already heard about the tragic events that took place this past Saturday involving football player Jovan Belcher.
Belcher, a 25-year old linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs, shot and killed Kasandra Perkins, his 22-year old girlfriend and the mother of his 3-month-old daughter, Zoey, and then turned the gun on himself.
The recent resignation of U.S. Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., surrounding the federal ethics investigations that came to light in recent months, led me to start thinking of how this could have happened.
Jackson was a burgeoning star on the rise until several situations involving ethics came to light, including a federal criminal probe based in Washington, D.C., into the alleged misuse of campaign dollars.
It really didn’t take me too long to realize that Jackson got caught slipping, doing the same thing that many other elected officials have fallen victim to.
President Obama was elected to be the 44th President of the United States, but it wasn’t by all people, it was by the majority of people and the majority of electoral votes that President Obama was re-elected. Roughly half of Americans split their votes between Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney (50%-48%) and reactions to Obama’s re-election have been split.
It’s been a little over a year since I started writing for the Houston Forward Times newspaper. I had always known about the rich history of the Houston Forward Times and how it has always been a leading voice for truth and timely information in the African-American community. The Houston Forward Times has been around for over 52 years in the Greater Houston area. Major celebrities, business leaders and elected officials, from all over, would stop by the Houston Forward Times to be interviewed or to share their side of a story.
NEWSFLASH...I interrupt your regularly schedule broadcast to drop this nugget of truth.
Oh, and let me preface that this isn’t an “I made it and you didn’t” rant or an “I’m better than you” stance.
This article is directed at those who continue to make excuses for people who can do better and choose not to. In other words, it’s just the honest to God’s truth. There is a saying that folks should just “Keep it Real!” Well, I’m all about keeping it real!
