Paula Harris, HISD Board PresidentAs her first term comes to a close, HISD Board President and District IV Trustee Paula Harris took the time to update the Forward Times on the state of the school district, District IV, and on what she hopes to accomplish as she seeks re-election for a second term. Harris, 47, was elected in 2007. She became president of the school board in January.

“I’m passionate about public education because public education was my ticket to success, as it was for my community, my family, and I know it is the ticket for our children,” said the Sunnyside native and Community Affairs Director for Schlumberger. Harris graduated from Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Harris County is projected to have over 512,000 seniors age 60+ years in 2012, and issues like housing, disability, long term care, family members trying to take over and make decisions for people who feel they’re still capable of making their own decisions, even if it ruffles the feathers of the younger generation in their families are challenges to be faced. Criminals are also attracted to a less resistant victim, like the elderly to ply their trade of murder and theft to enhance their devil’s lifestyle.

“The other night, President Obama, in his address to the CBC, said that it is time to start marching again. Well, those feet will be marching October 15. Those of us that believe that it is necessary to raise the level of drama for those that have been left out of the conversation will be marching together on that day,” Sharpton said at a Sept. 28 press conference at the National Press Club.

Wangari Maathai(CNN) -- World leaders have paid tribute to Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai who passed away while having treatment for ovarian cancer on Monday.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu praised Maathai as a true "visionary African woman" and called her a "leading voice on the continent."

He said: "Professor Maathai introduced the idea of women planting trees in Kenya to reduce poverty and conserve the environment," in a statement released via his office.
