NJCAA Announces 2011-12 Academic Student-Athlete Award Winners
The National Junior College Athletic Association has released the names of the 2011-12 NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards.
Over 1,680 NJCAA student-athletes met the requirements for individual academic honors. Nearly 60,000 student-athletes competed in the NJCAA for the 2011-12 academic year on over 3,500 teams in 28 different sports. The 2011-12 season marks the 29th year the NJCAA has recognized the success of its student-athletes in the classroom. With minimal changes, the NJCAA academic awards program has been in place since 1983.

The Miami Heat and the Oklahoma City Thunder captured their divisional crowns and have now set the center stage for what will become the ultimate prize in both team’s history.
It took just three years as the Thunder, only three years removed from a 3-29 start that had them on pace for the worst record in the Western Conference, to turn things around and capture the Western Conference Championship, winning 4-2 over the San Antonio Spurs in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Former Minnesota Lynx forward and WNBA star Taj McWilliams-Franklin will join the coaching staff at Rice University as an assistant women’s basketball coach at the conclusion of the 2012 WNBA season.
McWilliams, who is currently a member of the Minnesota Lynx, is a 14-year veteran and a six-time WNBA All-Star. The Lynx opened its 2012 season on May 20th with a convincing 105-83 win over the Phoenix Mercury. The league playoffs are scheduled for September 27th.
The city of Houston will play host to the 2012 Junior Olympic Games, July 25th-August 4th. Approximately 15,000 participants representing the 50 states and U.S. territories will take part in 18 various sports, with AAU national champions being crowned in each one.
With an estimated 30,000 spectators, the economic impact for the local host communities is estimated at over $60 million. Over 2,000 volunteers are needed for this prestigious, national event. “The AAU Junior Olympic Games prides itself with the Nation’s most outstanding athletes year in and year out,” Paul Campbell, Chairman of the AAU stated. “This event provides a unique opportunity for youth athletes of different sports to come together.”Founded in 1888, the Amateur Athletic Union is one of the largest, non-profit, sport organization, the AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs for all ages.
